Community

Westminster Village has shared a strong bond with Purdue University since our inception. Land for the community was purchased at an attractive price with the encouragement of Purdue University and the Purdue Research Foundation. Developed and constructed by Presbyterian Housing Program, Inc., the three apartment buildings with approximately 225 Independent Living apartments and the Health Center with 38 beds were opened and occupied between 1976 and 1977.  The first homes were constructed and occupied in 1979. In 1981, ownership of Westminster Village was transferred to a not-for-profit corporation with ownership vested in a local volunteer Board of Directors. Village residents and local civic, business, and university leaders serve on the Board of Directors.

The Courtyard was added in 1988, providing 20 large Assisted Living care rooms. In 1991, the Health Center was expanded to 46 beds. In 2005, the original Assisted Living apartments were converted to Health Center units, and one wing of the original Independent Apartment buildings was converted to Assisted Living units. Between 2004 and 2008, 36 additional homes were constructed for a total of 57 freestanding homes.

In 2015, a new concept in residential living—hybrid homes—was introduced at Westminster Village. The Terraces, a three-building structure, features 18 residences in each building. That same year, the 20,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art Live Well Fitness & Rehab Center also opened, offering everything from cardio equipment and two pools to art studios, classes, and an expansive room for outpatient rehabilitation.

Westminster Village has expanded many times throughout its 45+ year history in its mission to be the preeminent retirement community for living well in the greater Lafayette area. After several years of planning, construction began in the summer of 2022 to complete a $15 million expansion and repositioning project to expand our Assisted Living neighborhood from 38 to 58 apartment homes and add the secure state-of-the-art 14-unit Magnolia Court Memory Care, featuring our award-winning Heartfelt Connections Memory Care programming. All areas were designed with the latest in technological advancements and space design to ease the symptoms of those living with Alzheimer’s Disease and cognitive decline.

Along with the expansion, we also undertook a full renovation of our main Social Center that holds the main entry to campus, Mendelsohn Hall, Whitsel Hall, the Crossroads Dining Room, and the Village Pub. Within the newly renovated spaces an outdoor patio area was designed with the students from the Purdue School of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture that includes a fire feature and multiple seating areas with shade opportunities. The patio area is named Foundation Plaza due to the funds being provided by the Westminster Village Foundation. The result of Expansion 2022 was so successful that it has garnered being awarded by Senior Housing News 3rd place for the 2023 Renovation/Repositioning in the Annual Architecture & Design Awards. These projects are part of a multi-year master plan for the community at large completed in March of 2020.
